Tim Reeves
Drums
"Reeves (who had a past life as a pop star with
Mungo Jerry and T-Rex), conjured a variety of textures, dynamics
and feels while clowning about. The songs swing, rock,
lilt or wobble reggae-style."
Sydney Morning Herald
"But I warned him before I hit him, DON'T TOUCH THE VERSACE,
I said."
Tim Reeves, Queenscliff Music Festival 2001.
Tim
Reeves was born in Brighton, England. His father, as a dance band
drummer, played the devils music. Tim's musical journey
began when he was three. Now, many years and as many
drumkits have come and gone and the solitary snare is once again
his instrument of choice.
In the 60s Tim won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic
Art and his career was on stage and film until the mid 60s when
he started playing drums on English blues tours. He backed
top performers including Sonny Boy Williamson and John Lee Hooker. He
played with some great English bands through the UK and Europe -
even working with the legendary band The Fox whose album 'For Fox
Sake' is now a most sought-after cult psychedelic classic.
In 1971 he replaced Mal Green on drums to tour UK with another Split
Enz member, Nigel Griggs, in a band called Octapus; in 1972-74 Tim
played with Mungo Jerry - an act that sold 23 million records and
played to live audiences of 50,000. When Paul McCartney
auditioned 55 of England's finest drummers for Wings, Tim made the
shortlist of three. He then went on to play with Marc
Bolan (T Rex) in the mid seventies.
1988 Tim came to Australia and played with Shane Howard, Ed Keuper's
Saints, with Tim & Neil Finn and a number of other acts.
In 1997 he relocated to Byron Bay and found a musical niche just
waiting for him - he joined Azo Bell and Billy Milroy to complete
the outrageous Old Spice Boys. After twelve months the
trio split for two years. Tim jumped at the opportunity
to focus on dressing up.
By the time the Old Spice Boys re-formed in 2000 Tim had amassed
the finest wardrobe of frivolous designer garments to be worn
by an Australian musician since Hush in the Chokito ad. Tim
Reeves has been described in the Melbourne social pages as the 'Liberace
of the snare drum'. He has also been described
in other media as a 'regurgitated pop star'.
